KML files containing the public rights of way of South Gloucestershire

On this web page, Robert Whittaker made an EIR request to the council of South Gloucestershire for their public rights of way data. The Council has provided an ESRI shape file. On that web page, the Council says "The PROW dataset in South Gloucestershire area has been provided on this date (28 August 2019) and is not maintained by the Authority. The precise line of a right of way can only be determined by referring to the Definitive Map (at 1:10560 scale). The Council can accept no responsibility for any error or inaccuracy which may arise from the transposition of the rights of way Definitive Map to a different scale not for any updates not included." The Council also provides information about public rights of way on this online map.

An authority's Definitive Map is the authoritative source of their rights of way. The details of the public rights of way network contained in an authority's data are for information only, and are an interpretation of the Definitive Map, not the Definitive Map itself, and should not be relied on for determining the position or alignment of any public right of way. For legal purposes, an authority's data does not replace their Definitive Map. And changes may have been made to the Definitive Map that are not included in their data. The authority's data contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2026. Attempting to view this data with more detail than 1:10000 may produce an inaccurate rendering of the route of a public right of way.

This web page says the ESRI shape file is made available by the council of South Gloucestershire under the Open Government Licence. So it's possible for you to use this data provided you give an attribution.

I have transformed the ESRI shape file into a KML file.

I have converted this KML file into the basic KML format that is used by this web site for all authorities. For each public right of way, this basic KML format has the name of the authority (South Gloucestershire), a unique number within the authority for the public right of way, the name or number of the parish/community/area, the name or number of the public right of way, the type of the public right of way (i.e., footpath, bridleway, ...) and any additional information about the public right of way that I've obtained from the data supplied by the authority. Here is a link to the converted KML file for South Gloucestershire.

This KML file has been augmented with additional information. For each public right of way, the augmented format also includes its length (in miles), the longitude and latitude of its first point, the longitude and latitude of its last point, the eastings and northings of its first point and the eastings and northings of its last point. Here is a link to the augmented KML file for South Gloucestershire.

This web site also provides information about the public rights of way of South Gloucestershire in GPX format, in CSV format and in GeoJSON format.
